When I was offered a teaching position at SK Pulat, an indigenous school in the Gua Musang district, I knew it was an incredible opportunity I couldn't pass up. Although I had never been there, I eagerly accepted the job and began teaching on January 17th, 2000. Even though the school was located in a remote forest village, I viewed it as a challenge and a chance to step out of my comfort zone. That experience was one of my career's most rewarding and fulfilling moments. I did not expect to teach in a village far in the forest. However, I don't think negatively and consider that a challenge as a teacher.
The breathtaking sight of the village, nestled amid the wild terrain, left me spellbound. Though the journey to get there took an hour and a half, the experience was well worth the effort, particularly on a day with clear skies. However, the commute can extend to over three hours when it rains. The forest walk was a rejuvenating experience, with the sounds of nature I had never encountered before. As I delved further, I observed logging workers in the vicinity, indicative of the flourishing local industry.
As I arrived in the village, excitement and curiosity rushed over me. Everything was new and unfamiliar, but I was eager to dive into this new experience. I knew I would live and work here for the next few years, but I couldn't wait to immerse myself in the local culture and learn from the native people who call this place home. As we walked through the forest, a group of children followed us, their eyes shining with curiosity and wonder. For the first time, I saw the faces of the people who would soon become my students and friends. And I knew that this was the beginning of a truly transformative journey.
