A Meaningful Visit from Prince of Songkla University, Pattani, Thailand

RANTAU PANJANG - On 26 July 2026, our school had the pleasure of welcoming a special guest from Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Pattani Campus, Thailand. Although the visit was brief and informal, it was a meaningful occasion that strengthened friendship and professional collaboration between educators from Malaysia and Thailand. The visit reflected the importance of building educational networks across borders and creating opportunities for mutual learning and academic exchange.

The delegation was led by Professor Dr. Takiyuddin, accompanied by several of his master's degree students. Their visit was not part of a formal conference or official programme but rather a friendly courtesy visit. Even so, the conversations and interactions during the visit proved to be highly valuable. It demonstrated that meaningful educational partnerships can begin with simple personal connections, sincere hospitality, and open discussions about teaching and learning.

Upon their arrival, the guests were warmly welcomed. As a gesture of Malaysian hospitality, they were served a simple homemade lunch. Although the meal was modest, it provided a comfortable setting where everyone could relax, enjoy local food, and engage in friendly conversation. Sharing a meal together created a welcoming atmosphere that encouraged meaningful discussions and strengthened interpersonal relationships between the visitors and their hosts.

During the visit, Professor Dr. Takiyuddin, his master's students, and I spent time discussing various aspects of education in both Malaysia and Thailand. Our conversation covered several important topics, including the structure of primary education, teacher professional development, English language teaching, curriculum implementation, and the challenges faced by teachers in today's rapidly changing educational environment.

One of the key discussion points was the teaching of English as a second language. We exchanged views on the different approaches adopted in both countries to improve students' English proficiency. While Malaysia has implemented the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as part of its English language curriculum, Thailand continues to strengthen its own English language education through curriculum reforms and teacher development initiatives. These exchanges allowed us to compare teaching strategies, classroom practices, assessment methods, and the use of educational technology to support language learning.

The conversation also highlighted the common challenges faced by teachers in both countries. These included motivating students to communicate confidently in English, integrating digital learning tools into classroom instruction, addressing diverse learning needs, and ensuring continuous professional growth among teachers. Despite differences in educational systems and policies, we discovered that teachers in Malaysia and Thailand share many similar aspirations and challenges. This mutual understanding reinforced the importance of regional cooperation in improving educational quality.

A memorable part of the visit was the opportunity to present Professor Dr. Takiyuddin with two of my personal publications. The first publication focuses on English language teaching practices at my school, highlighting classroom innovations, effective teaching strategies, and initiatives implemented to enhance pupils' English language learning. The publication reflects my ongoing commitment to improving the quality of English education through practical classroom experiences and continuous professional learning.

The second publication documents my professional journey as an English language teacher for nearly twenty-six years. It shares my experiences, reflections, achievements, challenges, and lessons learned throughout my teaching career. The publication illustrates how dedication, lifelong learning, and a passion for education have shaped my professional identity over more than two decades of service. It also emphasises the importance of resilience, adaptability, and continuous improvement in responding to the changing needs of education.

Professor Dr. Takiyuddin expressed his appreciation upon receiving both publications. He acknowledged that personal narratives and classroom-based experiences provide valuable insights for educators, researchers, and postgraduate students. His master's students also showed interest in understanding how practical teaching experiences can contribute to educational research and professional development. This exchange of publications symbolised not only the sharing of knowledge but also a commitment to promoting academic collaboration between educators from both countries.

Throughout the visit, the master's students actively participated in the discussions by asking thoughtful questions about classroom practices, teacher competency, school leadership, and educational innovation. Their enthusiasm reflected the importance of connecting academic theory with real-life teaching experiences. The informal dialogue provided them with practical perspectives that complemented their postgraduate studies and encouraged them to appreciate the realities of school-based education.

The visit also created opportunities to discuss future collaborations between schools and higher education institutions. Ideas such as joint educational research, academic sharing sessions, professional learning communities, student exchanges, and collaborative seminars were explored during the conversation. Although these ideas remain at the discussion stage, they represent promising possibilities for strengthening educational partnerships between Malaysia and Thailand in the future.

Beyond academic discussions, the visit strengthened personal friendships built on mutual respect, trust, and shared educational values. Educational collaboration is most successful when supported by genuine relationships among educators who are willing to learn from one another. This visit demonstrated that friendship can become a strong foundation for future academic cooperation and cross-cultural understanding.

For me personally, the visit was a meaningful reminder that teaching is not confined to the classroom. Every conversation with fellow educators offers opportunities for learning, reflection, and professional growth. Meeting experienced academics and enthusiastic postgraduate students broadened my perspectives and reaffirmed the importance of lifelong learning in the teaching profession.

Significance of the Visit

Although the visit lasted only a short time, its significance was considerable. It strengthened friendship between educators from Malaysia and Thailand, encouraged the exchange of educational ideas and best practices, promoted academic networking between schools and universities, and opened possibilities for future collaborative research and professional development. The presentation of my two publications further symbolised the sharing of professional knowledge and teaching experiences that may benefit educators beyond national boundaries.

Gadget-Making Skills

SK GUAL TO'DEH - This week, the school hall of Dewan Sri Anjung, SK Gual To'Deh became a lively learning space as members of the Scouts, Tunas Kadet Remaja Sekolah (TKRS), and Puteri Islam gathered for their weekly co-curricular activities. The programme was organised to equip pupils with practical outdoor skills in preparation for the upcoming school camping programme.

Throughout the session, pupils were guided by their respective co-curricular coordinators and teachers. The main focus of the activity was learning how to build camp gadgets, an important skill that every camper should master before participating in a camping expedition. The pupils listened attentively as teachers demonstrated the correct techniques for constructing gadgets using ropes, wooden poles, and various lashing methods.

A camping gadget is a simple structure made from natural materials that serves practical purposes at a campsite. Examples include dish racks, shoe racks, hand-washing stations, rubbish bins, clothes hangers, cooking stands, and equipment holders. These gadgets help campers organise their campsite efficiently while promoting cleanliness, safety, teamwork, and creativity.

During the hands-on activity, pupils worked together in small groups to practise tying knots and lashings before assembling their own gadgets. Teachers moved from one group to another, providing guidance and encouragement while ensuring that every pupil understood the correct techniques. The hall was filled with excitement as pupils enthusiastically discussed ideas, shared responsibilities, and solved problems together.

The activity also emphasised important values such as cooperation, responsibility, patience, and leadership. Each group was encouraged to communicate effectively, divide tasks fairly, and support one another throughout the construction process. These soft skills are equally important as the technical knowledge gained during the activity and contribute to the holistic development of every pupil.

According to the co-curricular coordinators, the gadget-making session is one of the essential preparations for the upcoming School Scouts Camping Programme, which will be held from 3 to 6 August 2026 at Kem Pengakap Pusu 40, Pasir Mas, Kelantan. During the four-day camping programme, every participating group will be required to construct and display their gadgets at their respective campsites. The quality, creativity, stability, and functionality of each gadget will form part of the camping assessment.

By introducing these skills before the camping programme, teachers hope that pupils will arrive at the campsite with greater confidence and readiness. Early exposure allows them to practise repeatedly, improve their techniques, and understand the importance of proper planning before beginning any outdoor activity.

Besides preparing pupils for camping, the session also strengthened friendships among members from different uniformed bodies. Although the Scouts, TKRS, and Puteri Islam each have their own unique traditions and activities, they shared the same learning environment and supported one another throughout the programme. This spirit of unity reflects the school's commitment to fostering harmony, mutual respect, and collaboration among all pupils.

The school administration expressed its appreciation to all teachers and coordinators for their dedication in organising meaningful co-curricular activities that provide valuable real-life learning experiences. Such programmes complement classroom learning by allowing pupils to apply knowledge, develop practical skills, and build positive character through active participation.

PASIR MAS– SK Gual To'Deh successfully conducted a benchmarking visit to SK Tok Sangkut as part of its continuous efforts to strengthen educational excellence through strategic collaboration and the sharing of best practices. The visit marked a significant milestone in fostering a professional partnership between the two schools, reflecting their shared commitment to enhancing school management, educational implementation, and the overall school environment.

Through this Memorandum of Understanding, both schools have agreed to work closely in enhancing school management practices, improving the implementation of educational programmes, and promoting initiatives that contribute to a more vibrant, attractive, and conducive school environment. SK GUAL TO'DEH - Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Gual To'Deh successfully held its Anti-Bullying Programme Launch at Dewan Sri Anjung, SK Gual To'Deh, to strengthen awareness among pupils about the importance of creating a safe, respectful, and caring school environment. The programme brought together school administrators, teachers, and pupils in a united effort to promote kindness, mutual respect, and zero tolerance towards bullying.

Th Hj Adnan Bin Hj Abdullah officiated the School-Level Anti-Bullying Programme.

The programme was officially launched by the Headmaster of SK Gual To'Deh, Th Hj Adnan Bin Hj Abdullah, who delivered an inspiring and meaningful speech to all pupils. During his address, he highlighted that bullying remains one of the most worrying issues affecting schools today. He reminded pupils that every child has the right to learn in a safe and supportive environment without fear of being bullied, threatened, or excluded by others.

In his speech, the headmaster also referred to several bullying incidents that had shocked the nation in recent years. He explained that these unfortunate cases had caused emotional trauma to victims and their families while raising serious concerns about student behaviour and school safety. He encouraged pupils to learn valuable lessons from these incidents by choosing kindness over violence, respect over hatred, and understanding over discrimination. He stressed that bullying, whether physical, verbal, emotional, or cyber-related, should never be accepted in any form.

Furthermore, Th Hj Adnan reminded pupils that preventing bullying is a shared responsibility. He encouraged them to become responsible individuals who are brave enough to report bullying incidents to teachers, parents, or school counsellors instead of remaining silent. He also advised pupils to be supportive friends by standing up for victims and helping to build a positive school culture where everyone feels accepted and valued regardless of their background or abilities.

The highlight of the ceremony was the official launching gimmick, where the headmaster symbolically cut the programme banner to mark the beginning of the school's Anti-Bullying Campaign. The symbolic act received enthusiastic applause from teachers and pupils, signifying their commitment to making SK Gual To'Deh a bully-free school. The ceremony reflected the school's determination to foster a peaceful learning environment based on respect, empathy, and cooperation.

The programme was coordinated by Pn Fatonah Bt Abdullah, the school's guidance and counselling teacher, who played an important role in planning and organising the event. Through her commitment and dedication, the programme successfully conveyed important messages about bullying prevention and student well-being. She expressed her hope that the campaign would inspire pupils to become more caring, responsible, and respectful towards one another in their daily interactions.
